Cairo’s history is getting a fresh spotlight as Heritage Revival Week returns from August 22nd to 26th, 2026. Organised by Ihyaa for Heritage and Arts in collaboration with UNESCO, the five-day programme will explore the city through heritage, architecture, cinema, photography, and contemporary art.
A Celebration of Cairo’s Layers

This year’s edition carries the theme “Layers Unseen, Stories Untold”, inviting audiences to look beyond Cairo’s famous landmarks and discover the stories hidden within its neighbourhoods, buildings, and everyday spaces.
Heritage Meets Architecture
Architecture takes an important role throughout the programme, with activities examining how Cairo’s built environment reflects different periods of the city’s development. The events aim to encourage people to see familiar streets and structures from new perspectives, revealing the layers of history that often go unnoticed.
Cinema, Photography, and Memory
The week also connects Cairo’s heritage with visual storytelling. Cinema and photography will be used to explore how the city has been documented, remembered, and represented, creating a bridge between its past and present.
Talks, Tours, and Workshops

Visitors can expect a varied programme rather than a traditional exhibition. Lectures, discussions, workshops, tours, and other cultural experiences will give participants opportunities to engage directly with Cairo’s heritage. The programme is designed to cover both tangible heritage, such as buildings and urban spaces, and intangible heritage, including stories, traditions, and cultural practices.
Bringing Different Voices Together
Heritage Revival Week will bring together researchers, artists, students, and members of the public. Egyptian universities, cultural and educational institutions, Ministry of Culture-affiliated organisations, and civil society groups are also involved, creating opportunities for different perspectives to meet around Cairo’s history.
Heritage Revival Week is more than a look into the past; it is an invitation to rethink Cairo through the places, memories, and creative voices that continue shaping the city. From August 22nd to 26th, the capital’s heritage becomes a starting point for new conversations about its identity and future.
