Almeria Downtown: A Hidden Gem That Transforms from Café to Restobar by Night

Tucked away on Talaat Harb Street inside the Cinema Radio Building, Almeria is one of those places you could easily walk past without noticing, unless you’re really paying attention. But once you do spot it, it feels like uncovering a hidden gem in the heart of Downtown Cairo.

By day, it operates as a laid-back café, but by night, it transforms into a cosy restobar, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed evening out. We chose to visit at night, and the shift in atmosphere is instantly noticeable.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

Once we stepped in, the space felt effortlessly warm, inviting, and full of character. The ambience leans into a chilled, cosy setting, with rustic elements, old patterns, and plenty of wood textures shaping the interior.

The décor feels deeply nostalgic, with vintage-style paintings scattered across the walls, warm colour palettes, and soft lighting that wraps the space in a comforting glow. It almost feels like stepping into a cool grandmother’s house, in the best way possible. Even the details stand out, from the textured, patterned plates that look like they’ve been taken straight out of an old kitchen cabinet, adding to the overall charm and authenticity of the experience.

Starting with Mezze & Small Plates

We began with a selection of classic Levantine starters, and the table quickly filled with flavour. The Hummus (150 EGP) was smooth and well-balanced, while the Mohamara (150 EGP) brought a slightly sweet, nutty depth. The Cashew Crusted Halloumi (300 EGP) added a satisfying crunch, pairing well with the creamy dips.

The Batata Harra (150 EGP) came bold and flavourful, with a satisfying kick, and the Armenian Kibbeh (260 EGP) offered a crisp exterior with a well-seasoned filling. Meanwhile, the Crispy Cheese Rolls (250 EGP) were indulgent and perfectly golden, making them an easy crowd-pleaser.

Mains & Heavier Plates

Moving into the mains, the menu continues to celebrate bold, comforting flavours. The Hummus with Chilli Kabab Karaz (500 EGP) stood out with its rich, slightly tangy profile, while the Makanek with Lentils (350 EGP) delivered a hearty, satisfying combination. Even though we were wary at first to try it, it didn’t disappoint and was one of our favourites on the table.

The Levantine Mezze Platter (485 EGP) offered a bit of everything, making it ideal for sharing, while the Cheese Mix Manoucheh (380 EGP) added a warm, cheesy comfort.

For something more familiar to balance the selection, the Classic Margherita (265 EGP) came as a reliable option, simple yet satisfying. The pizza was perfectly cheesy and packed with flavour, with every bite melting effortlessly on your taste buds in the most satisfying mix of richness and warmth.

Drinks & Light Bites

On the drinks side, there was plenty of variety. The Stella (140 EGP) and Sol (140 EGP) kept things classic, while the Whiskey Sour (250 EGP) and Mojito (250 EGP) added a refreshing twist. Non-alcoholic options like Pomegranate Fizz (90 EGP) and Ginger Lemonade (100 EGP) ensured there was something for everyone. To end on a sweet note, the Chocolate Cake (250 EGP) offered a simple, satisfying finish.

The Verdict

Almeria delivers a unique Downtown experience that blends nostalgic charm with a lively restobar concept. It’s the kind of place that feels intimate yet social, making it ideal for a chill night out with friends or a relaxed evening date. What makes it stand out is not just the food, but the overall atmosphere, from the warm lighting and rustic interiors to the small, thoughtful details that make the space feel personal and inviting.
